Why I Like this Book:

In a series of short poems, Carter introduces young children to oceans and the creatures they’ll find in and above the water. From sea birds to mollusks, whales and beyond, readers meet a variety of common and more unusual creatures. Each poem weaves across one spread drawing our eyes to the waters and the creatures as we read. Serene blues fill most spreads in this introduction to the oceans that comprise 70% of the earth’s surface. There’s even a poem explaining the water cycle, helping young listeners understand the connection between the weather cycle, rivers, and oceans.

Whether read to young toddlers at home or older children at school, Hello, Ocean! is a lovely introduction to the oceans and the creatures who call it home.

A Note about Craft:

Hello, Ocean! is a work of nonfiction that engages readers by breaking up information into short poems – snapshots of life along the beaches and tidepools at waters’ edges and in the water itself.

This Perfect Picture Book entry is being added to Susanna Hill’s Perfect Picture Book list. Check out the other great picture books featured there!

  1. I love, Love, LOVE the number of ocean books that are releasing this year! The spotlight is shining on the ocean and its inhabitants for good reason. And this one for the younger end of readers looks perfect! Great pick!

    • I just found another ocean book with the same name! By Corinna Luyken. I think I’ll wait a few weeks to review it, as I don’t want to confuse everyone with what will look like a repeat post.

  2. I wish I could plan a perfect day at the beach! I feel that if you grew up near one it will always haunt you to be away. Sigh. But I will look for this title!

    • I didn’t grow up near a beach either. And I didn’t like the waves and cold water as a child. But then I discovered gentler seas with warmer waters. I still have trouble sitting still and reading on a beach, but I can walk back and forth or snorkel all day! I hope you find a beach you enjoy sometime soon!

Great find Patricia. I look forward to reading this. Wish it was as I was on a beach. . . maybe one day.
